Chris Kubasik in his wonderful blog called Classic Traveller: Out of the Box, has brought Traveller back to its beginnings, as a simple but flexible set of three ‘Little Black Books’ that can be used to create stories in the sci-fi setting of your own imagination. This is how Traveller was first meant to be played, and I’ve spent several days doing just that, creating my own Traveller universe based on what is in those three rulebooks.
This setting has been inspired by many modern images of a Soviet space-future, and also to the look and feel of classic old-style Soviet movies like The Sky Beckons (Nebo Zovyot, 1959), A Dream Come True (Mechte Navstrechu, 1963) and The Planet of Storms (Planeta Bur, 1962). All of these movies are currently available to view on You Tube (28-08-2019). Sure, many of the old Soviet sci-fi films are low-budget and were never considered classics (although both of Tarkovsky’s movies Stalker and Solaris, are today recognized as definitive movie milestones). But it is the look of the movies, and the tone that KOSMOS 68 tries to emulate. KOSMOS 68 can be played with Classic Traveller (the LBBs) or The Traveller Book. Additional Traveller Supplements 1, 2, 4 and 6 might also be useful, these are: 1001 Characters, Animal Encounters, Citizens of the Imperium and 76 Patrons. You will find Zozer Games’ solitaire book SOLO invaluable, too.

OUTWORLD is a short and simple setting, inspired by the movies Alien, Aliens, Outland and Silent Running (amongst others) and it uses only the tools and rules of Traveller Books 1, 2 and 3 to help build a rough facsimile of those movies. The setting is entirely original, and not connected to the settings of Ridley Scott’s Alien or Blade Runner movies, but it is inspired by his films, by the others in my list above and by later movies (the Alien sequels for a start). It is not connected to my game HOSTILE, either.
In the spirit of Chris Kubasik’s Traveller blog, let’s stick to the rules as written if we can, and keep our game setting small, manageable and bursting with adventure opportunities.

This booklet is a free solo roleplaying campaign for Traveller. Set within the Neutral Zone of the Spinward Marches between the Imperium and Zhodani Consulate , it chronicles the adventures of a husband and wife team of naval veterans. They must track down and expose a rogue naval commander who is operating totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct, and must pretend to be free traders whilst searching for leads and rumors.
If they do track down the rogue admiral, they may not find what they expect!

THE SHOULDER OF ORION

The Shoulder of Orion is my single sub-sector setting for Classic Traveller, it is the Traveller universe I always wanted to create when I was younger, but just didn't have the knowledge or the stamina to create. But now, it is done! A pocket of humans, exiles from a doomed Earth light years from home, trying to protect themselves from alien cultures all around. The Human Republic is inward looking, militaristic and paranoid. The Morlocks are post-apocalyptic Darrians that look like Mind Flayers, the Gukamatz of the Million Sun Empire are intelligent raptors, descendents of Earth's troodont dinosaur population, and the Gorgons are gas giant flyers, intelligent creatures creating crystalline ships, who resemble the Jgd from an issue of the Journal. Artificially intelligent mechanoids, the Assemblers, who seem to ignore human presence do on occassion cause a problem, these AI fleets are the remnants of the old Human Republic robot war fleet that tried to stop the Gukamatz invasion.
Mankind remains hemmed in and paranoid.

CLASSIC TRAVELLER RULES COMPANION

Here is my own Classic Traveller Rules Companion with minor tweaks to the rules to speed play, along with my fast-play vehicle damage rule and a fast-play space combat rule that involves a handful of player character task rolls and that's it. There's also a couple of notes on skills and skill selection. Everything's done to speed things up even more.... it won't be to everyone's taste, but it tries to change as little as possible, whilst retaining the free-wheeling spirit of Classic Traveller.

PLAYING SOLO CLASSIC TRAVELLER

My own solo rules for playing Classic Traveller. It involves some worldbuilding, but also the creation of a group of player characters that meet patrons and take on missions. It is set out as a procedure that is followed step by step, alternating between an episode of worldbuilding and episodes of character-driven play. Suitable for long term play!

USS HIGH GUARD

Traveller Book 5 has a wonderful system for creating a 'lifepath' for naval characters. It is a game in itself. and easily adapted to the Star Trek universe. The advantage of setting High Guard's character generation system in Starfleet is that the players can picture ships, staterooms, uniforms, ranks even the academy itself.

Our Departments

Classic Traveller Rpg

Active Measures
Adventures. There is one subsection, Getting Off The Ground, which contains adventure seeds in the standard 'Adventure Seed' (scenario-plus-possible-solutions) format.
Columns
Regular columns by regular columnists. Our current active column is Timothy Collinson's Confessions of a Newbie Referee, and past columns that you can still read include The Fifth Imperium, Shannon Appelcline's guide to refereeing Mongoose Traveller, and Essay Question, where our readers can share their thoughts on various aspects of Traveller.
Critic's Corner
Reviews of Traveller products, for our readers, by our readers. There are three subsections: LinkLooks, where reviews of Traveller-related websites may be found; Other People's Toys, where we carry reviews of non-Traveller gaming materials of interest to Traveller players; and Off The Table, reviewing fiction that the reviewer feels has a connection to Traveller.
Doing It My Way
'House rules', ruleset mixes, and modifications or extensions to rules. Any version of Traveller is fair game, whether currently in print or not. There are several subsections for different types of rules.
In A Store Near You
Goods that the player-characters might encounter as available for purchase. Some may be truly useful in a campaign; others are for 'color'. There are currently four subsections:
The Gun Shop
Personal weapons. Not all of these will necessarily fit the normal definition of 'gun' (e.g., grenades), but all will be weapons that a single person can carry and use.
Handle With Care
Items of all sorts that may present a hazard to the unwary character.
The Promenade
Describes the shops that the players might purchase goods in. For campaign 'color'.
The Showroom
Vehicles of all types, all tech levels, for getting around when a spaceship or starship Just Won't Do.
Information Center
This section is for non-game support of Traveller - software listings (and some downloads), pointers to other websites, news about publishers, product listings, and so on.
Kurishdam
Articles here will be for 'background color' to a campaign, to give the setting depth. Has several subsections:
Art and Entertainment
Activities and entertainments that are often associated with 'culture', whether performance art like dance or opera forms, or fine arts such as painting or sculpture.
At Home, We Do It Like This
Descriptions of interesting local customs and traditions.
Games People Play
Descriptions of games and sports of all types.
The Club Room
Describes organizations such as religions, clubs, and lodges. Also used for racial, cultural, and societal profiles, similar to the series of 'Contact!' articles in the original printed Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society.
Lecture Hall and Library
'Color' articles written in a style that might fit well in an encyclopedia, collection of public or university lectures, or other scholarly compilation.
The Lab Ship
This section is for articles about real-world science, both established and 'cutting edge', that may be of use for adding verisimilitude to a campaign universe. Not for reprints of commercially published articles; rather, authors should discuss the science and provide some ideas and/or outlines of rules for incorporating the science into a Traveller campaign.
Less Dangerous Game
This section is for articles about animals that might be encountered in a game.
Multimedia Gallery
Artwork created by Traveller fans. May include still pictures, movie clips, music, and anything else that can be made available through the World Wide Web.
Other Roads
Describe your Traveller universe as a setting. Emphasis should be on the differences from the standard setting, and should be at the game level, e.g., allowed technologies, political alignments, different star maps, and so on. Variant rules for play, however, should be submitted for Doing It My Way.
Raconteur's Rest
Traveller-based fiction. Can be pure storytelling, or 'novelization' of an actual campaign. There is one subsection, Lost Diaries, where the stories are implied - and left unfinished - by a series of entries in a diary or log.
The Shipyard
Articles about starships and ship-related topics. Includes ship profiles, deck plans and pictures, and alternative technologies.
Up Close and Personal
Descriptions of individuals that could be encountered in a campaign, as patrons, opponents, contacts, rivals, allies, and so on.
