To introduce these new features, Timm presented a webinar on May 30, 2017, on how to use PerRoad 4.3 to compare mixes developed through the 1993 AASHTO Pavement Design Procedure, the AASHTO MEPDG process, and other M-E Design procedures. Then, the AASHTO 1993 designed structures were simulated with MEPDG to predict performance over 20 years of service life. The comparative analysis of AASHTO 1993 design guide and MEPDG revealed that although all pavement sections in this study were designed with the AASHTO 1993 method for the same serviceability loss, they exhibited different performance as predicted by MEPDG.

The online version of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (ME-PDG) is available to anyone with Internet access who has an interest in evaluating the guide and software. The pavement design guide is provided in an Adobe PDF format that is read-only, non-save, non-printable, and non-editable. The software can be downloaded for installation on a local drive in executable form, but its copy-protection feature requires access to the Internet to check for a specific file on the Transportation Research Board web server at each use. Certain supporting technical reports from Project 1-37A are available online in an unrestricted PDF format. This version will expire when the guide and software are available from AASHTO or at another time determined by NCHRP. NCHRP may revise this version as necessary and provide updates on the Internet.

About This Item

Full Description

The AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, Interim Edition: A Manual of Practice provides the highway community with a state-of-the-practice analysis tool for evaluating pavement structures using mechanistic-empirical principles, using project specific traffic, climate, and materials data for estimating damage accumulation over a specified pavement service life. This manual is applicable to designs for new, reconstructed, and rehabilitated flexible, rigid, and semi-rigid pavements. Performance and distress predictions models are used to aid the pavement designer in determining the desired pavement section.
Currently, there is no commercially available software program associated with the MEPDG manual, however, AASHTO has issued a project solicitation to its member states for the development of commercial grade software for the design and analysis of new and rehabilitated pavements using mechanistic-empirical methods. If the required number of states fund the proposed project, software development is expected to be completed by mid-2011. If you have additional questions about this software program, please contact Vicki Schofield at vschofield@aashto.org.
